LDH FORWARD LAYOUT
S.O.G. 500-97-7
I. PURPOSE
To establish a standard
operating guideline for a forward layout of large diameter hose (5”).
II. SCOPE
All fire department personnel.
III. RESPONSIBILITY
Company officers are responsible
for supervising all firefighters during emergency operations. All firefighters
are responsible to understand and perform assigned duties pertaining the
layout of supply lines.
IV. PROCEDURES
1. The hydrant man(# 4 riding
position) “catches” the hydrant in the normal fashion, allowing sufficient
hose to permit the hydrant hook-up.
2. Remove the “hydrant bag”
from the engine’s tailboard and place it near the hydrant. Various adapters
in the bag can be used to make the hydrant connection.
3. The 5” hose will be removed
from the hose bed and the hydrant man will wrap the hydrant and notify
the driver by voice or hand signal to proceed to the scene.
4. If the hydrant is equipped
with a 4 ½” steamer outlet, the 4 ½” NST x 5” Storz outlet
adapter shall be utilized. When no steamer connection is available,
the 2 ½” x 5” Storz outlet adapter shall be used.
5. The layout of 5” hose
on a forward layout shall not exceed 25 mph.
6. Once the apparatus is
in position on the fireground, the supply line must be disconnected at
the nearest coupling. If more hose is needed to make the pump connection,
a 10’ or 25’ length shall be used to complete the connection. The supply
line will be connected into the gated intake valve.
7. Once all connection are
complete, the hydrant man upon a signal from the engineer, by either radio,
three (3) blasts of the “air Horns” or hand signal will fully open the
hydrant. When opening the hydrant the firefighter shall stand behind he
hydrant to prevent an injury if the coupling disconnects.
8. Upon completing the hydrant
operation, the hydrant man will report to the fireground to help the #5
(Ladder/ outside vent man).
9. If the supply line is
to be picked up by the second due engine the hydrant man will lay the line
in the street and get back on the apparatus. The officer will radio the
second engine to complete the layout and hydrant hook-up.
