Post Office Route 371 Pleasant Mt., PA    August 6, 2003
A fire tore through a two story wood frame building that housed the Pleasant Mount, PA Post Office (Wayne County) and two residential apartments early Wednesday morning. 

The fire, which appeared to get it's start on the first floor, quickly spread vertically, giving firefighter a battle. Residents living in a  second floor of the apartment building were able to exit the building before firefighters arrived but a pet cat was not so lucky, perishing in the fire. 

Engine 281, (Pleasant Mount Emergency Services) the first arriving engine, made an aggressive interior attack with help from second arriving engine company, Engine 52, on the first floor. 

Third arriving engine company, Engine 43 (Browndale) went to the second floor, find several room, where the fire had spread.  Despite the aggressive attack, companies were ordered out of building until Ladder 18 (Clifford) was able to open the roof. 

Following a high volume exterior attack, company were able to reenter the structure to complete a through overhaul. 

The post office, located on the first floor, suffered heavy damage. Under the direction of Postmaster Joseph White, mail and other items were removed in an attempt to salvage as much as possible. 
 

Additional companies were called to assist with overhaul. Engine Company 13-1 and 13-3 handled the overhaul.

Rescue 51-1, from Carbondale Fire Department in Lackawanna County, provided it's cascade system to refill BA cylinders.

Companies remained on the scene through the early morning. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. There were no civilian injuries reported. A State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the fire's cause.
