Route 170 Clinton Twp. Jan 9, 2003
A homeowner smelled smoke early this morning and confirmed his suspicions that a fire was burning in his chimney and may have extended to the floor and wall of his family's  one story ranch on Route 170 in Clinton Township, Wayne County. 

Despite fact the chimney that went throught the center of the home was recently cleaned was no consolation to Podunajec family as smoke began the fill the structure and the chimney turned red hot.
 

"I smelled smoke," said Mr. Podunajec, "and went to check the stove. There was smoking coming out all the round the chimney. I went the the attic area and the chimney was red hot. I immediately called 911."

Stations 94 ( Prompton), 43 ( Browndale), 12 (Seelyville) 75 (Waymart), 41 (Forest City), 28 (Pleasant Mount) and Waymart EMS were dispatched by Wayne County Communications Center at about 05:45 hours.

First arriving chief officer from Station 94 reported smoke in the structure and fire in the chimney area. As suspected, the fire had extended in the walls and floors near the chimney area. The chimney, which was plugged solid with creosote, gave firefighters a struggle as the attempted to insure the fire did not extend any further.

Companies 12, 28 and 41 were returned to service, while 94, 43 and 75 completed overhaul operations. No injuries were reported.  All companies cleared the scene at 07:05 hours.
