SGT. Job Description

DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Lt., plans, organizes, directs, and administers all operations of s assigned to him/her by the Fire Chief within the authority delegated.

EXAMPLES of DUTIES

  • Develops and coordinates plans for departmental training with the training officer;
  • Assist in the development and coordination of the recruitment, retention and Cadet programs
  • Attends training programs oriented to the duties of a squad leader
  • Oversees and provides for departmental operations to ensure safe and effective EMS operations.
  • Ensures compliance with local, State & Federal laws and standards within his scope of authority.

    DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

    Thorough knowledge of the use and operation of a wide variety of emergency equipment;

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

    Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent;

    Must have and maintain a valid PA drivers license;

    Completion of  Essentials of Firefighting, RIT, Incident Command, Hazardous Materials First Responder, CPR, Basic 1st Aid & AED Certified or equivalent training or education for aforementioned requirements. 

    Required to attend certification classes and seminars outside of the immediate area

    Ability to supervise and serve as a lead worker, maintain discipline, and cooperate with other officers and employees;

    Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to superiors in the form of presentations, reports;

    Assist in preparation of a master plan for future department operations;

    Ability to complete written reports;

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Develop and post an annual training schedule designed to ensure that essential emergency medical skills and techniques are practiced.

    Provide training, both initial and continuing education coordinating with the LT and the Chief for Safety and Training.

    Ensure equipment and inventories for emergency responses are adequate responses;

    Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training per year;
     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

    Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent;

    Minimum of three (2) years of extensive experience in firefighting work of a progressively responsible nature;

    Must have and maintain a valid PA drivers license;

    Completion of  Essentials of Firefighting, Incident Command, Hazardous Materials First Responder, Awareness and RIT

    Must have and maintain certification and licensure as CPR & Basic 1st Aid.

    Must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of training per year;

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
    Hearing, seeing speaking; Walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling.

    Can expect to be called at any time regardless of time or weather conditions.

    Able to endure heights and confined spaces;

    Able to endure extreme temperatures, heavy smoke conditions, chemical, physical, and mechanical hazards;

    Must have ability to lift/carry heavy equipment and objects, either alone or with the assistance of others.

    MENTAL DEMANDS
    Reading, writing, communications;

    Having contact with persons experiencing adverse trauma;

    Ability to make decisions in emergency and pressure situations;

    Communicating verbally and in writing to superior officers;

    Ability to comprehend and complete tasks based on verbal and written objectives;
